The son of a British couple detained in Iran has expressed concerns about their safety following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran amidst widespread anti-regime protests.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman were traveling the world on a motorcycle journey when they were arrested by Iranian authorities in January 2025 on charges of espionage. Despite denying the allegations, the couple remains imprisoned in Iran amid ongoing protests that have led to arrests, violence, and executions.
Their son, Joe Bennett, disclosed that the protests have caused overcrowding in Iranian prisons due to the high number of arrests. He shared unsettling details from his parents about the unsafe and frightening conditions inside the jail, including fights breaking out daily.
Joe highlighted the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran as a significant concern in their efforts to secure his parents’ release. The embassy shutdown was confirmed by a government spokesperson, who stated that operations would continue remotely.
In the face of these challenges, legal representatives for Craig and Lindsay have applied for bail in Tehran. Joe expressed worries about his parents’ safety and uncertainty about their next steps without access to the embassy for refuge.
Despite ongoing assessments by the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, the situation remains unresolved. Concerns about the deteriorating health of the couple were raised, with Lindsay developing a skin condition and Craig experiencing weight loss and dental issues due to inadequate nutrition and medical care.
