Long-distance vacations offer thrilling adventures, but they often involve enduring long hours in a cramped plane seat and struggling to adapt to a new time zone upon arrival.
For travelers willing to splurge, upgrading to business or first-class for access to lie-flat beds is an option. However, this luxury typically comes at a steep price, making it unattainable for many.
Air New Zealand has introduced a more affordable alternative that can be enjoyed by economy and premium economy passengers as an add-on. On ultra long-haul flights between New York and Auckland, passengers can now reserve a slot in the Economy Skynest™, starting from May 18, with full service available from November.
Described as “the world’s first sleep pods in the sky,” Skynest features six individual lie-flat nests that can be booked for four-hour intervals during the flight. This service is particularly beneficial on the up to 18-hour flight duration, providing passengers a much-needed break from their economy class seats.
Each Skynest booking includes a complimentary amenity kit with essentials like an eye mask and earplugs. The pod is refreshed between passengers to maintain cleanliness and features a seatbelt to ensure uninterrupted rest. Additionally, passengers have access to a USB charging outlet and a small light for reading or device use.
A session in the Skynest starts from $495 New Zealand Dollars, about £215, offering a premium experience at a more affordable rate than flying in a premium cabin.
This is not the first upgrade Air New Zealand has offered to economy passengers. In 2011, they introduced Skycouch, allowing passengers to reserve an entire row that converts into a lie-flat bed for added comfort on lengthy journeys.
Skycouch is available on selected routes for passengers flying on Boeing 777-300ER or 787-9 aircraft. The cost varies depending on the route and availability, ranging from NZ$525 to $1,500 per row (approximately £228 to £652). United Airlines plans to launch a similar product called Relax Rows in 2027, while Lufthansa already provides the option of a Sleeper Row on flights lasting over 11 hours.
