A 32-year-old woman named Tegan McGhee, referred to as the “evil” stepmother, was revealed as the perpetrator who fatally harmed a four-year-old boy under her care. The decision to disclose her identity was made by a judge recently.
McGhee was handed a life sentence by Mr. Justice Paul McDermott for the murder of Mason O’Connell Conway at a residence in Rathbane, Limerick city on March 16, 2021. The child’s father, John Paul O’Connell, aged 36, had previously admitted to endangerment, neglect, and obstructing the apprehension or prosecution of McGhee, knowing she had killed his son. O’Connell received a seven-year prison term.
Mason, aged 4, was discovered with severe injuries at the Rathbane house on March 13, 2021, and tragically passed away three days later. Medical professionals identified multiple bruises on the child’s body, indicating deliberate harm or abuse.
McGhee, who lacked a permanent address, was also sentenced to four years and six months for two counts of child cruelty leading up to the murder. The judge expressed condolences to the victim’s mother, Elizabeth Conway, and the extended family.
In a heart-wrenching statement, Elizabeth Conway remembered her son as a vibrant and caring child, born in early 2016. Mason was described as a loving brother who brought joy to everyone around him. Despite the tragedy, Conway cherished memories of her son’s kindness and happy moments shared with the family.
The mother recounted the heartbreaking decision to discontinue life support after the fatal incident, revealing the last moments with her son before his passing. She emphasized the loss caused by what she termed “pure evil,” reflecting on the trust her son had in his perpetrators.
The tragic events surrounding Mason’s death have left a community in mourning, with the legal proceedings bringing some closure to a devastating chapter in their lives.
