Anas Sarwar reiterated his stance on urging Keir Starmer to step down during a discussion with the Prime Minister on Thursday. At a press briefing the following day, the Scottish Labour leader humorously referred to his call for Starmer’s resignation as the “nuclear option” that he took earlier in the week.
Sarwar’s demand for the Prime Minister to resign came amidst the Peter Mandelson scandal, marking him as the most prominent figure to make such a call. This move posed a critical moment for Starmer, but he received support from his Cabinet ministers who publicly backed him.
During an event in Edinburgh, Sarwar disclosed that he had a conversation with the Prime Minister the day before, emphasizing their shared focus on the upcoming elections in Scotland scheduled for May 7. He highlighted the importance of a UK Labour Government proving its commitment to Scotland during the electoral campaign.
Despite reaffirming his previous statements, Sarwar expressed his forward-looking approach, emphasizing the electoral choice between himself and First Minister John Swinney for the country’s future.
Additionally, Sarwar reaffirmed his support for nuclear energy in Scotland, jokingly mentioning that he had chosen the “nuclear option” twice that week. He emphasized the importance of honesty and strength, contrasting it with what he described as repeated dishonesty from the SNP Government.
Despite the turbulent start of the week, Sarwar emphasized the unity within the Labour Party in Scotland and expressed full support for Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander in his campaign role. He also highlighted the collective effort of Scottish Labour MPs in the campaign to secure a Scottish Labour government.
In a Cabinet meeting, Starmer conveyed the party’s unified support for Sarwar to become the first minister and reiterated the commitment to strive for a Labour government in Scotland.
