A highly skilled young student tragically ended her own life after concealing mental health struggles from her family and therapists, according to an inquest. Laura Louise Spreadbury, aged 12, was discovered in her home in Great Sankey, Warrington, after a day out with her father, younger sister, and a friend. Despite her father’s efforts to administer first aid, Laura was pronounced dead at Warrington Hospital at 9.04 pm on June 29 last year.
The coroner, Victoria Davies, concluded that Laura’s actions were intentional, noting her history of mental health challenges. Laura, who excelled in various activities including rugby and scouting, had been a vibrant and accomplished individual. Her father praised her resilience and high standards she set for herself.
Laura’s struggles with self-harm and suicidal thoughts were documented in medical records, leading to a referral to mental health services. During therapy sessions, it was revealed that Laura had high self-expectations, struggled with low moods, and felt a sense of hopelessness.
Following the inquest, St Gregory’s High School and Warrington Council expressed profound sadness over Laura’s passing, highlighting her popularity, humor, sporting prowess, and leadership potential. The school community mourns her loss and extends condolences to her loved ones.
