A tragic incident unfolded during a leisurely hike when a bear viciously attacked a teenage girl and her stepfather.
Olga Moskalyova, aged 19, and her stepdad Igor Tsyganenkov were out hiking in the rural outskirts near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, when they encountered a group of brown bears, unaware of the imminent danger.
The bear initially targeted Igor, fatally injuring him in front of Olga. Despite her attempts to flee, Olga was caught by a Siberian bear after running approximately 200 feet.
In a harrowing turn of events, Olga managed to contact her mother during the attack, describing the excruciating experience of being bitten and dragged to the ground by the bear. Her desperate cries for help echoed through the phone call, conveying the severity of the situation.
Upon hearing the distressing sounds in the background, Olga’s mother, Tatiana, realized the gravity of the situation as her daughter’s cries for help turned into agonizing pleas. The heartbroken mother recounted the unbearable moment of hearing the bear growling and attacking her daughter.
Despite Olga’s continuous calls for help, the tragic ordeal came to a devastating end when she conveyed her final words to her mother, expressing relief from the pain and profound love before the line went silent.
Following the heartbreaking loss, Olga’s mother alerted the authorities, leading to a team of hunters dispatched to locate and eliminate the bears responsible for the fatal attack. Tragically, the bears were found still feeding on the remains of the teenager.
Remembered as a vibrant and kind young woman with a promising future, Olga had recently accomplished milestones like graduating from music school and obtaining her driver’s license before the tragic bear attack that claimed her life and that of her stepfather.
Both victims were laid to rest on the same day in 2011. Incidents of bear attacks, like the one that befell Olga and Igor, are reportedly on the rise in Russia, especially in wildlife regions where bears perceive human presence as a threat to their habitat.
