“Death Trap Farm: 27 Animals Perish During The Hobbit Production”

Date:

A total of 27 animals perished on a farm described as a “death trap” that housed livestock used in the production of The Hobbit film series.

Allegations from animal handlers involved in the movie suggested that the production company was accountable for the deaths prior to the film’s release in 2012. They attributed the fatalities to hazardous conditions at the New Zealand farm, including cliffs, sinkholes, and damaged fencing.

Chris Langridge, one of the animal handlers, expressed his concerns about the perilous conditions at the farm where he managed around 50 horses. Despite his efforts to mitigate risks by filling sinkholes and providing barriers, he found the challenges insurmountable.

The production company acknowledged being informed about the animal deaths, attributing some to natural causes. They stated that immediate actions were taken upon learning of the issues to prevent future incidents.

Highlighting the need for safe conditions, Langridge emphasized that horses require flat terrain due to their high speeds.

The first casualty was Rainbow, a miniature horse intended for use in the film, who had to be euthanized after sustaining a broken back from a fall.

Following Rainbow’s death, another horse named Doofus suffered an injury but recovered. Subsequently, a horse named Claire was found dead after falling into a stream, leading to further fatalities among the animals relocated to stables.

Several goats, sheep, and chickens also perished due to various causes, including sinkholes, worms, and attacks by dogs. The situation prompted a wrangler, Johnny Smythe, to voice his concerns and eventually get dismissed.

While the American Humane Association affirmed no harm to animals during filming, it acknowledged the lapses in supervision at the housing and training facilities.

A spokesperson for the film’s director confirmed the deaths of multiple animals at the farm and highlighted efforts to improve conditions after the incidents.

Following the tragic events, significant investments were made to enhance animal housing facilities to prevent similar incidents, according to the production company.

The farm where the animals were housed is no longer used by the production company, and all creatures have been relocated. Plans for future filming involving animals remain uncertain.
