Labour Criticizes Green Party Over Drug Playground Fears

Date:

Labour has criticized the Green Party, alleging that their policies could lead to playgrounds becoming places for drug use.

Policing Minister Sarah Jones condemned Green leader Zack Polanski for his remarks about potentially legalizing class A drugs. In response, Polanski dismissed Labour’s claims as baseless and reiterated the need for a new approach to addressing addiction and crime.

Labour highlighted a Green Party document from 2019 that suggested recreational drugs could have positive effects on relationships and creativity. Jones warned that such proposals could have devastating consequences, leading to community disintegration and widespread drug problems in public spaces.

The Green Party’s manifesto proposed the establishment of a National Commission to review UK drug laws, potentially paving the way for regulated drug markets.

In response to inquiries about drug legalization, Green candidate Hannah Spencer expressed openness to discussing decriminalization. Meanwhile, Polanski accused Labour of spreading falsehoods to gain political advantage in the upcoming by-election.

Labour’s stance emphasized strict measures against drug-related crimes and substantial investments in prevention and treatment to curb substance abuse. They cited instances, such as in Oregon, where drug decriminalization led to an increase in opioid-related deaths.

Labour argued that the Green Party’s proposals risk normalizing drug use as a recreational activity. The government highlighted significant drug seizures by the Border Force as evidence of ongoing efforts to combat illegal drug activities.

The Green Party’s 2024 manifesto reiterated their commitment to establishing a National Commission to reform UK drug laws based on evidence. Their approach aims to decriminalize personal drug possession and shift focus towards addiction support and harm reduction.
