A devastating fire has swept through a shopping center in Karachi, Pakistan, claiming the lives of at least six individuals and causing multiple injuries. Shocking visuals captured flames engulfing the Gulo Plaza shopping center as firefighters battled the inferno overnight. A large crowd gathered outside, including those who had evacuated the multi-story building, watching the harrowing scene unfold.
According to rescue spokesperson Hassaanul Haseeb Khan, the fire originated in ground-floor shops and rapidly spread upwards, trapping people inside the high-rise structure. Authorities implemented a “mass disaster protocol” in response to the emergency. Khan reported, “Upon arrival, the fire had already spread to upper floors, engulfing almost the entire building in flames. The situation is critical, but six fire trucks are diligently working to contain the fire.”
Tragically, the casualty toll rose as rescuers discovered individuals within the blaze. Police medic Dr. Summaiya Syed confirmed that six bodies had been transported to Karachi’s Civil Hospital, with 11 injured individuals receiving treatment for burns and smoke inhalation.
Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to Gul Plaza after reports of the fire surfaced around 10 pm local time. Most shop owners were closing their businesses when the fire erupted and swiftly spread. Television footage depicted firefighters in protective gear battling the flames using ladders, water cannons, and hoses to extinguish the fire that ravaged the building, emitting thick black smoke visible from a considerable distance.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities intend to launch an investigation post-extinguishment. Karachi, like many parts of the country, lacks adequate fire prevention and firefighting systems, leading to frequent incidents resulting in damage and casualties.
The fire spread quickly, originating in an area where shopkeepers stored imported garments, clothing, and plastic household items, exacerbating the blaze. Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province, has witnessed similar incidents due to inadequate safety measures. In a previous incident in November 2023, a fire in a shopping mall claimed 10 lives and injured 22 others.
A team from Sindh Rangers has been dispatched to support firefighters and aid in evacuating individuals trapped inside the building. The statement from the Sindh Rangers affirmed their active participation in rescue operations until the completion of the mission.
This tragic event underscores the importance of stringent fire safety measures in public spaces to prevent such devastating incidents.
