“UK Confirms Ballistic Missiles Launched Towards Cyprus by Iran”

Date:

Two ballistic missiles with significant destructive potential were launched towards Cyprus on Saturday, as confirmed by UK Defence Secretary John Healey. He stated that the Ministry of Defence does not believe the missiles were specifically aimed at the island but expressed concerns over Iran’s escalating and uncontrolled attacks.

Healey mentioned that the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli operation would not be mourned by many, condemning the Iranian regime as a “source of evil.” He emphasized the increasing threat faced by military and civilian personnel in Cyprus due to Iran’s indiscriminate and widespread attacks.

The Defence Secretary reported that recent Iranian strikes in Bahrain came dangerously close to British troops and disclosed that UK forces had successfully intercepted Iranian drones in northern Iraq within the past 24 hours. He highlighted the risks posed by Iranian missile commanders having more autonomy in target selection, indicating a breakdown in command and control within Iran.

Healey assured that British defensive aircraft in the Middle East would take immediate action against Iranian missiles and drones if detected. He explained that UK aircraft deployed from Qatar and Cyprus are safeguarding against threats to these regions, reinforcing regional stability through coordinated defensive operations.

Regarding Khamenei’s death, Healey remarked that few would lament the loss, particularly considering the regime’s history of violence and support for terrorism. He refrained from commenting on the legality of the US strikes but reiterated the shared objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Amid criticism from some political figures, Healey defended the UK’s defensive stance and emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalations. He acknowledged concerns over rising oil prices and potential economic impacts, urging Iran to cease its weapons programs and engage in negotiations for peace.

The evolving situation in the Middle East underscores the fragile balance of power and the critical need for diplomatic efforts to avert further conflict and instability.
