Piranhas have attacked over 40 individuals, including children, prompting the closure of a popular beach due to safety concerns.
The incidents occurred at the Parana River near Victoria, located approximately 209 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, as people were seeking relief from the heat. Hospital Fermin Salaberry’s emergency department treated multiple individuals, both young and old, for bite injuries sustained while swimming in restricted areas.
One victim reportedly suffered a finger amputation, with 46 individuals sustaining serious injuries, as confirmed by beach guard Alejandro Martin. He attended to all 46 cases, utilizing three first-aid kits. Authorities advised against swimming in the piranha-infested waters, emphasizing the importance of heeding the warning signs posted on the beaches.
Visitors have been cautioned to avoid entering the water and to closely supervise children. Additionally, they were instructed to seek medical assistance if bitten. Following the recent attacks, images revealed numerous individuals with injuries on their feet and other body parts, attributed to heightened piranha activity near the shore during the region’s summer season.
While piranhas are known for their danger, fatalities from their attacks are extremely rare due to limited human interaction. Nevertheless, there have been cases where individuals have sustained injuries from piranha bites. In a separate incident in Brazil, at least 10 people were injured by piranhas while swimming in a river, leading to the closure of the affected area and the installation of warning signs.
Local authorities have announced plans to conduct a technical investigation into piranha attacks in the area to better understand and address the risks posed by these fish.
