Quick-Thinking Passenger’s Bathroom Move Spares Life

Date:

A woman narrowly escaped tragedy in the recent Spanish train crash by changing carriages when she couldn’t use the occupied toilet in her original carriage. Her decision to move to a different carriage ended up saving her life as the eighth carriage, where she originally intended to go, suffered fatalities while everyone in the fifth carriage survived.

The incident, which resulted in at least 39 deaths, remains under investigation by authorities. Spain’s Transport Minister, Oscar Puente, described the collision as peculiar, considering both trains were operating within the speed limits and the tracks had been renovated just a year prior.

A passenger named Lucas Merakio, who was on the Madrid-bound Iryo train that collided with another Renfe train southbound to Huelva, shared his harrowing experience. He recounted how a woman’s decision to use the toilet in a different carriage likely spared her life and described the chaos and shock that ensued after the crash.

In an interview with a Spanish TV station, Lucas detailed the intense moments during and after the collision, including the efforts to help injured passengers before emergency services arrived. The scene was chaotic, with injured individuals seeking assistance and a young girl separated from her parents in the aftermath of the devastating crash.
