A teenage boy played a crucial role in saving his father’s life after he suffered a heart attack while playing football in a park with his kids. When Rene Chirinos experienced difficulty breathing and chest pain during the game, his 17-year-old son David recognized the symptoms and quickly called for emergency assistance.
David’s recent visit to a hospital for a school trip had equipped him with knowledge about heart attacks and chest compressions, which he applied to help his father. Paramedics arrived promptly at the scene in St. Petersburg, Florida, and rushed Rene to the hospital, where he underwent a successful procedure to insert a stent in his heart.
Doctors at HCA Florida Northside Hospital commended the brave actions of the teenager for his quick thinking and decisive response. In recognition of his heroism, David was presented with a military coin during a special ceremony at the hospital on Monday.
The hospital staff aimed to raise awareness about the signs of heart attacks, which may include dizziness, sweating, and shortness of breath in addition to chest pain. Despite being in good health, Rene experienced these symptoms after the football game in January.
During the ceremony, David, humble in his acknowledgment, mentioned the importance of the training he had received on heart attacks and chest compressions. Reflecting on the incident, Rene expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal and meeting the first responders who came to his aid.
Lindsay Douthitt, the stroke coordinator at Northside Hospital, praised the hospital team and emphasized the vital role played by David in the life-saving efforts. She explained that the military coin presented to David was a token of appreciation for his actions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone in the US suffers a heart attack every 40 seconds, with about one in five cases being silent heart attacks, where the person may not be aware of the damage caused.
