The unfortunate story of a cherished German Shepherd has come to light following a deceitful act by its owner.
Nathan Paul McKeown triggered a massive search effort last November, alleging that his Toyota HiLux, with his beloved dog Arnie inside, was stolen by thieves. He informed his wife of the incident, reported the vehicle as stolen, and made a heartfelt plea to the public to help locate the seven-year-old canine, offering a substantial reward for Arnie’s safe return.
However, it has now been revealed that McKeown’s narrative was built on falsehoods. Contrary to his claim of the vehicle being stolen, the 43-year-old, residing in Australia, simply couldn’t recall where he had parked his car after a night of heavy drinking and drug use. He concocted an elaborate story to mask his extensive pub crawl.
Subsequently, it was found that he was too intoxicated to remember, and no one took his claims seriously. The Irish Mirror reported that he had locked his dog inside the vehicle and completely forgotten its location.
After ten days without food, water, or ventilation, Arnie was tragically discovered deceased. Residents noticed a foul smell emanating from the car during a city-wide search in Brisbane. A post-mortem examination confirmed that the dog had perished due to dehydration and heat exposure.
Despite making numerous media appearances with his unsuspecting wife, McKeown portrayed himself as devastated and sleepless since Arnie went missing. Sympathetic locals even organized search parties in a bid to find the dog.
Following the grim discovery of the dog’s remains, Australian authorities initially charged McKeown with neglecting his duty towards an animal. However, the charges were later upgraded to intentionally causing harm to an animal. Additionally, he faced various traffic-related charges, including driving without a valid license, driving under the influence, and obstructing police, to which he pleaded guilty in court.
McKeown’s lawyer, Patrick Quinn, expressed that his client had cherished Arnie since the dog was a puppy and had no intention of causing harm. He mentioned that McKeown was undergoing alcohol rehabilitation and had taken full responsibility for his deceitful actions, thanking the police and community for their efforts in searching for Arnie.
Despite having no prior criminal record, Magistrate Deborah Vasta emphasized the severity of McKeown’s actions, which led to him losing his job and his family’s trust. She criticized his deception, stating that lying to the public, who earnestly searched for the dog, was unacceptable.
McKeown faced significant public backlash in Australia after the truth emerged, with Ms. Vasta acknowledging the intense criticism he received. He was handed a 240-hour community service order and an eight-month driving ban but was not convicted of any crimes.
