“Father from Bolton Fights Off Great White Shark in Channel Swim”

Date:

A father from Bolton successfully fought off a four-foot Great White shark that attacked him during a 20-mile open water swimming challenge in the Catalina Channel near Los Angeles. Chris Murra, 54, was swimming in darkness when he felt the shark’s teeth on his hand, causing a significant injury. Despite the initial attack, he managed to kick the shark away when it latched onto his foot. The support crew initially mistook his distress for a minor issue until they realized the severity of the situation.

As the shark returned for another attack, Chris bravely resisted and eventually climbed back into the safety of the boat. Despite sustaining severe lacerations, he remained composed and downplayed the incident, attributing it to a mere “nibble.” Chris received immediate treatment on the support boat before being transferred to the hospital by the LA fire department.

Although the experience was harrowing, Chris expressed determination not to let it deter his passion for open water swimming. He reassured others by highlighting the rarity of such encounters in the vast ocean, emphasizing that the odds were incredibly slim. Chris’s family received updates from the coach, Tim Denyer, reassuring them of Chris’s well-being.

Looking ahead, Chris intended to move past the incident and continue his love for swimming in the open sea, urging others not to be discouraged by his encounter. He acknowledged the natural fear many have of deep waters but encouraged people not to let isolated incidents hinder their enjoyment of the ocean.
