Three skiers were involved in a serious off-piste mountain incident today, resulting in two fatalities. The incident occurred near Pizzo Meriggio, in Albosaggia, Italy, where the skiers had ventured off marked slopes. Emergency services were alerted promptly, leading to a rapid response effort.
Three helicopters were dispatched to the scene, including one from the Regional Health Service, one from the Guardia di Finanza, and one from the Fire Brigade, to assist in the challenging rescue operation. Medical teams successfully reached two of the skiers, who were airlifted for treatment. Tragically, two individuals were pronounced dead, while the third was urgently transported to a hospital.
The third skier was later discovered buried under snow and was rescued by the Fire Brigade’s SAF unit using a Drago 150 helicopter. Pizzo Meriggio is situated in the central Orobie Alps of Valtellina, accessible via multiple trails, facing Valmalenco. Albosaggia, located in the province of Sondrio, is renowned for its broadleaf woodland, starting at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level.
