Calls to Halt King’s DC Visit Amid Trump Criticisms

Date:

Keir Starmer is facing calls to intervene and halt King Charles’ upcoming visit to Washington DC following Donald Trump’s harsh criticisms of the UK. The planned meeting between the monarch and Queen Camilla with the unpredictable US President next month is raising concerns amid Trump’s ongoing verbal assaults on the British government.

There is mounting pressure to cancel or delay the visit due to worries that it could be perceived as insensitive, especially with the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has urged Keir Starmer to advise the King to call off the state visit in light of Trump’s controversial actions, including launching military actions affecting the region and escalating energy costs for British households.

Stressing the inappropriateness of honoring Trump with a royal visit at this time, Labour backbencher Rachael Maskell expressed reservations about the visit, emphasizing the need to prioritize addressing the current conflicts over other diplomatic engagements. Green Party deputy leader Rachel Millward echoed similar sentiments, denouncing Trump’s administration and questioning the wisdom of the King’s visit to the US.

Recent tensions escalated between the UK and the US following Trump’s criticism of Starmer’s decision not to support US military actions in Iran initially. However, after subsequent events, including attacks on British allies, the UK granted permission for the US military to use British facilities. Trump’s recent comments hint at strained relations, with him questioning the UK’s support in international conflicts and comparing Starmer unfavorably to historical figures.

In a recent phone call, the Prime Minister and the US President discussed the Middle East situation and reaffirmed military cooperation between the two countries. While expressing condolences for US military losses, both leaders emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation in shared defense efforts.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper defended Starmer’s decisions, highlighting the need for each country to act in its own national interest, even if disagreements arise. Cooper emphasized the strength of the security partnership between the UK and the US while acknowledging occasional differences of opinion, such as in recent military actions and basing support decisions.
