An issue with the NHS computer system has caused a delay in sending vaccination invites to “thousands” of children, including those for a crucial new chickenpox jab.
According to a whistleblower, the outdated IT system failed to send out letters for child vaccinations and appointments, resulting in a botched implementation of the new 18-month chickenpox appointment. As a result, only a few children have received the new appointment, leading to empty clinics and potential risks of children contracting preventable diseases like chickenpox.
The glitch, affecting children in Scotland, was disclosed by NHS National Services Scotland (NSS), which acknowledged delays in sending out vaccination letters and providing inaccurate information about routine childhood vaccination appointments.
The whistleblower mentioned that plans to replace the old IT system are overdue and over-budget, as reported by the Daily Record. Scottish Labour Health spokesperson Jackie Baillie expressed concerns over the situation, urging the SNP government to address the issue promptly to ensure every child receives necessary vaccinations.
Scotland recently integrated chickenpox protection with the MMRV vaccine, but the NSS admitted delays and inaccuracies in letters regarding vaccination appointments. Some letters for 12-month and 18-month appointments were not sent on time, with incorrect or incomplete information about various vaccines.
Steven Flockhart, Director of Information and Security at NSS, attributed these issues to an update in the appointment scheduling system. Efforts are underway to resolve the problems in collaboration with health authorities, and corrected letters have started to be issued.
NHS National Services Scotland aims to have all children receive their accurate appointment letters in the coming weeks following the recent system updates.
