Canadian Ice Hockey Player’s Mysterious Death Unearthed

Date:

The discovery of a Canadian ice hockey player’s body in an Austrian glacier, years after his disappearance, continues to raise questions due to the mysterious circumstances surrounding the incident. Duncan MacPherson, who had claimed to have ties with the CIA, vanished without a trace in August 1989, just before he was supposed to sign with Dundee’s Tayside Tigers.

After 14 years, MacPherson’s remains were found in the Austrian Alps, remarkably well-preserved with multiple fractures and a crushed leg. His family, believing there was a cover-up, spent their savings on 10 trips to Austria to seek answers about their son’s death, even taking the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

George Carr, a Dundee hockey supporter, described the situation as unusual, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over MacPherson’s disappearance, which stands out as a peculiar incident in the city’s ice hockey history. MacPherson, originally from Saskatoon, was drafted by the New York Islanders in 1984 but never played in the NHL.

Following the end of his contract with the Islanders, MacPherson planned to join the Tayside Tigers as a player-coach. Before his disappearance, he contacted Ron Dixon, a millionaire set to buy the Tigers, indicating his imminent arrival in Dundee. However, MacPherson disappeared after taking a snowboarding break in Austria.

Despite extensive efforts by his family and friends, MacPherson’s whereabouts remained unknown until his vehicle, left at the base of the glacier, was linked to a friend who had lent it to him. Allegations of CIA involvement added further complexity to the case, with a mistaken identity in 1994 prolonging the family’s search.

In 2003, MacPherson’s remains were discovered by a worker on a ski slope in Neustift, hidden under melting snow and ice. Authorities claimed he fell into a crevasse, but a Canadian forensic expert disputed this explanation based on the bone fractures pattern, hinting at possible machinery involvement.

The MacPherson family accused Austrian officials of concealing the truth, while Austrian authorities maintained they had cooperated fully in the investigation. The family’s application to the European Court of Human Rights was reviewed, concluding that the authorities had diligently pursued the case to the best of their abilities.
