A 7-month-old infant was fatally shot while seated in a stroller during daylight in New York City, according to police reports. Authorities have released an image of the suspected shooter and have one individual matching the description in custody for an unrelated matter. The search continues for a second suspect linked to the incident.
The child, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was with her mother when gunfire erupted in the East Williamsburg area around 1 pm on Wednesday. Upon hearing the shots, the public, including the baby’s parents and her 2-year-old brother, sought refuge in a nearby store. Tragically, the mother discovered that Kaori had been hit in what authorities believe was a gang-related shooting.
CCTV footage from the store captured the moment the mother realized her baby was injured, causing her to react emotionally. The infant was rushed to Woodhull Hospital but was pronounced dead.
During a press briefing, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that a man on a motorcycle fired at least two shots while riding against traffic at Humboldt and Moore streets. The motorcycle crashed, leading to the arrest of the suspected shooter, while a large-scale search is ongoing for the driver.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the need to address gun violence in the city. Video footage showed the suspects being hit by a car as they tried to escape, resulting in their capture. The rear passenger, who matched the shooter’s description, was taken into custody after receiving medical attention.
Authorities are now working to establish the connection between the apprehended individual and the shooting incident.
