The sibling of a British attorney who perished in a widespread methanol poisoning incident has criticized the penalties imposed on 10 individuals connected to the situation as completely inadequate.
Simone White, aged 28, was among six casualties who lost their lives after consuming complimentary shots at the Nana Backpacker Hostel in Vang Vieng, Laos, in November 2024. Zak, her brother, expressed his dismay following reports that the 10 individuals accused of tampering with evidence had received suspended sentences and were fined $185 (£135) each, with no further legal action anticipated.
In his statement, Zak remarked, “It appears unlikely that we will ever uncover the truth behind the tragedy or witness a fair judicial outcome. We have sensed from the outset that justice would not prevail. The authorities in Laos have proven uncooperative and sluggish in expediting the process.”
Simone, hailing from Orpington in south-east London, along with her childhood friend Bethany Clarke, fell victim to poisoning after gathering at the hostel, where approximately 100 guests were offered complimentary shots. It is suspected that the beverages were contaminated with methanol, a hazardous substance commonly used in paint thinner and sometimes illicitly added to alcohol to reduce expenses.
An accomplished lawyer specializing in technology and intellectual property at the London branch of the US firm Squire Patton Boggs, Simone initially mistook her symptoms for a hangover before her health rapidly deteriorated, leading to her eventual demise from a brain hemorrhage days after unknowingly ingesting the toxic substance.
Reports indicate that the hostel has since reopened under a different name. Bethany, the survivor, emphasized the lingering uncertainties surrounding the case, including the identities of the accused individuals. She expressed, “For all the affected families, the pursuit of justice seems increasingly improbable.”
Bethany recounted how she and Simone had spent the day tubing down a river before returning to the hostel for a night of drinking, assuming they were consuming regular spirits. She recollected, “We consumed methanol-laced shots – about five or six each, mixed with Sprite.”
Reflecting on the distress of witnessing Simone’s hospitalization, Bethany recalled, “Medical staff assured me they were doing everything possible to save her. She experienced seizures during dialysis. At one point, they mentioned a 70% chance of recovery. I clung to hope.” Simone underwent emergency surgery, with Bethany adding, “Her brain began to swell, necessitating shaving her head. The surgery relieved the pressure but triggered bleeding and swelling on the other side.”
Hamish Falconer, a Foreign Office minister, expressed solidarity with the affected families regarding the disappointing outcome and acknowledged their frustration. He affirmed the UK government’s expectation of decisive action by Laos against those involved in distributing contaminated alcohol, stating that the matter continues to be raised through the British embassy.
