The Russian laboratory known for developing the infamous Novichok nerve agents is suspected of producing the poison from dart frogs that the UK claims caused the death of Alexei Navalny, a prominent critic of the Kremlin.
Recent findings by scientists at Porton Down, the secretive defense facility in Wiltshire, have definitively linked the presence of epibatidine, a potent neurotoxin naturally occurring in South American dart frogs, to samples associated with Navalny. Navalny, a leading figure in the Russian opposition and anti-corruption movement, was discovered deceased in his cell at a secluded Arctic prison on February 16, 2024, at the age of 47.
Accusing Moscow of breaching the Chemical Weapons Convention, the UK, along with France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands, has condemned Russia’s alleged involvement. In response, Russia has dismissed these accusations as part of a misinformation campaign, as reported by Tass news agency.
During the Munich Security Conference, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper asserted that only the Russian government possessed the means, motive, and opportunity to deploy the poison while Navalny was incarcerated.
Cooper stated, “Russia viewed Navalny as a threat. By employing this poison, the Russian state exhibited the reprehensible tactics at its disposal and the profound apprehension it harbored towards political opposition.”
In a collective declaration, European allies emphasized that captive dart frogs do not naturally produce the toxin and that it is not indigenous to Russia, casting doubt on any innocent explanation for its presence in Navalny’s body.
The State Research Institute of Organic Chemistry and Technology (GosNIIOKhT) in Russia is believed to have conducted research on synthesizing the frog toxin, in addition to being associated with the development of the Novichok nerve agent family. Navalny had previously been poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent in 2020 and received medical treatment in Germany.
In 2013, GosNIIOKhT employees published a scientific paper outlining a method for producing epibatidine, an analgesic compound. Subsequent studies in 2015 detailed the chromatographic detection of minute quantities of epibatidine in blood plasma and proposed the synthesis of structural analogues of the toxin.
The institute’s involvement in the Novichok program, notably the 2018 poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, led to sanctions imposed by the EU and the US on the facility.
Dr. Alexander Kutkin, the director of GosNIIOKhT, reportedly hosted a gathering attended by individuals linked to experts in poisonings associated with Putin’s regime.
According to investigative journalist Sergey Kanev, guests at the event included key figures such as Pyotr Tsikhmaystruk, Yuri Litvinov, Colonel Maksim Sharoiko, Natalia Chernomashentseva, and Sergey Evdokimov.
