Storm Ingrid Approaches: Britons Urged to Prepare

Date:

Britons are advised to prepare an emergency kit as Storm Ingrid approaches with a yellow weather warning issued for heavy rain and 60mph winds.

Severe weather conditions have triggered a “danger to life” amber alert in Scotland, leading to potential flooding risks. The eastern parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland are currently experiencing the brunt of heavy rainfall before the storm progresses northward.

Storm Ingrid, named by the Portuguese meteorological service, is expected to bring rain and strong winds to 23 regions in south-west England and Wales. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for these areas, cautioning about possible flooding and travel disruptions.

The Met Office has emphasized the importance of flood preparedness, urging residents to create a flood plan and assemble an emergency kit. Power outage readiness is also highlighted, recommending the gathering of essentials like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.

The weather warning is effective from 2 am tomorrow until 9 am on Saturday, with up to 40mm of rain anticipated on already saturated ground, posing a high risk of flooding. Winds could peak at 60mph during this period.

According to the Met Office, heavy rain is expected on Friday, followed by additional rainfall on Saturday morning, potentially causing further flooding due to the saturated ground. Strong winds and coastal gales are also forecasted, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph near coastal areas.

Neil Armstrong, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, highlighted the slow-moving nature of Storm Ingrid, projecting heavy rain and strong winds across southwest England before easing by Saturday morning. The saturated ground increases the likelihood of impacts, with large waves and gusty winds expected, particularly along southern coastlines, where gusts of 60mph are possible.

The regions most at risk are South West England and Wales, where residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the impending severe weather conditions.
