Children at a primary school were instructed to remain indoors following reports of an individual potentially carrying a firearm nearby. Platt Bridge Community School in Wigan, Greater Manchester, took precautionary measures earlier today after being contacted by the police around 11.55 am regarding emergency service reports of a person with a gun in the vicinity.
Law enforcement officers promptly responded to the situation, which was later confirmed to be a false alarm with no immediate danger to the broader community, as per information from Manchester Evening News. The incident was resolved over an hour later, around 1 pm.
In a message addressed to parents and caregivers, Mr. Stephen Wallace, the headteacher of the school located on Rivington Avenue, assured that there was no direct threat posed to the school, students, or staff members. The school’s decision to keep the children indoors was a precautionary step as advised by the authorities.
Mr. Wallace stated, “We received notification from the police to keep all children inside the school premises due to an ongoing police incident in the local area. We promptly followed this guidance, enhanced our internal security measures, and maintained the children indoors until being informed by the police that the situation had been resolved. Our school, students, and staff were not at risk at any point; the incident was contained within the wider community.”
He further emphasized, “In such circumstances, the safety of the children is our utmost priority, and ensuring the security of our premises is paramount.”
