Nigel Farage is facing criticism as a “fake patriot” lacking moral integrity and backbone, according to TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak. Nowak accused the Reform UK leader of scheming to diminish the rights of millions and relying on mere gimmicks and stunts. Despite Reform UK’s current lead in the polls, Nowak expressed confidence that voters will turn away from them once they see more of Farage.
In an interview, Nowak stated, “I believe he’s a counterfeit patriot. His agenda involves stripping away rights from millions of his fellow citizens. How is that patriotic? How is that supporting the working-class people of this nation?” Nowak criticized Farage for spending more time at Mar-A-Lago than in his Clacton constituency, where constituents support bans on zero hours contracts, fire and rehire practices, and advocate for robust employment rights, contrasting with Farage’s stance.
Nowak further lambasted Farage for his intention to dismantle Labour’s workers’ rights package, including protections against exploitative contracts and strengthened sick pay. While acknowledging voter disillusionment with mainstream politics, Nowak urged the Government to fulfill its promises to win back support for Labour and expose the disparity between Farage’s rhetoric and actions. The focus, he emphasized, should be on pushing the government to better serve the working class.
In response, a spokesperson for Reform UK defended Farage’s track record, highlighting the party’s consistent lead in opinion polls and recent electoral successes as evidence of public support.
