A murder trial jury was informed that a five-week-old infant passed away due to severe brain injuries caused by 47 rib fractures inflicted by her parents in repeated assaults. Darcy-Leigh Jefferson also suffered fractures on both legs in the days leading to her death in March 2022, according to prosecutors. Sean Jefferson, 35, and Amy Clarke, 34, have pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering Darcy-Leigh and being involved in her death.
During the trial at Stafford Crown Court, prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC stated that Darcy-Leigh died on March 29, 2022, after being admitted to the hospital. The court was informed that Clarke resided in a well-organized residence in Hudson Drive, Burntwood, Staffordshire, where she concealed her excessive alcohol consumption and cocaine use behind a facade of being a responsible mother.
Sandhu detailed that Darcy-Leigh, born prematurely on February 20, 2022, weighing just over four pounds, suffered a fatal brain injury leading to her death. The prosecutor emphasized that the parents were responsible for the fatal head injury inflicted on Darcy-Leigh. Sandhu highlighted the numerous injuries the infant endured, including 47 rib fractures and leg fractures, indicating consistent physical abuse she endured throughout her brief life.
The court learned that despite professional visits, Darcy-Leigh was not registered on a child protection system due to an error, despite being under social services’ supervision. Sandhu also revealed the tumultuous relationship between Jefferson and Clarke, emphasizing their history of disagreements and aggression, exacerbated by substance abuse.
The trial disclosed threatening messages from Jefferson to Clarke during her pregnancy, indicating a volatile relationship characterized by drug abuse. Sandhu underscored the significant risk posed to Darcy-Leigh due to the parents’ history of substance abuse and violent behavior, shedding light on the circumstances leading to the infant’s tragic death.
Further revelations during the trial included Darcy-Leigh’s birth by caesarean section and subsequent discharge from the hospital, where she was reported to be in good health. The court was informed of Clarke’s drug use and Jefferson’s involvement in a tumultuous relationship marked by conflicts and drug consumption.
