“South African Woman Convicted of Murdering 4-Year-Old Stepdaughter”

Date:

A South African woman, Amber Lee Hughes, 26, has been convicted of premeditated murder and rape of her ex-partner’s four-year-old daughter, Nada-Jane Chalita. Hughes admitted to abusing the child, causing severe vaginal injuries, and ultimately drowning her in a bathtub on January 23, 2023. Despite initially denying the allegations, Hughes expressed remorse during her sentencing, stating that she believed the child was better off dead than being with her father.

During the trial, Hughes testified that she felt the young girl should have died instead of being with her father, claiming it was the better option for the child. She acknowledged her actions, mentioning that she thinks about the incident daily while in prison and believed at the time that it was the best course of action.

Reports revealed that Hughes drowned Nada-Jane following an argument with the child’s father, whom she accused of infidelity. In a message sent before the crime, Hughes expressed anger towards him, indicating her intentions to retaliate. Shortly after, she submerged the child in the bathtub, leading to her tragic death.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Nada-Jane had been raped multiple times before her murder, with evidence of recent vaginal trauma. Hughes, while denying the rape allegations, admitted to being aware of her actions that day. She disclosed suffering from borderline personality disorder during the incident but acknowledged her conscious decision-making.

Nada-Jane’s father lamented the lack of justice for his daughter, emphasizing that no punishment could suffice for the heinous crime committed. Sentencing proceedings are ongoing as the court deliberates on the appropriate consequences for Hughes.
