“Disruptive Passenger Causes Chaos on Edinburgh to Turkey Flight”

Date:

A disruptive individual, part of a family group, caused a holiday flight from Edinburgh to Turkey to be redirected, leading to significant distress among passengers and crew. Identified as Michaela Hawes, she exhibited agitated behavior after consuming alcohol, directing offensive language towards cabin crew and the captain. The flight was rerouted to Germany where Hawes, aged 36, was escorted off by police.

According to Edinburgh Sheriff Court, the incident resulted in a three-hour delay and crew members exceeding their permitted flight hours due to Hawes’ intoxicated conduct. The airline, Jet 2, incurred expenses for accommodating passengers overnight in a hotel, as the return flight from Turkey to Edinburgh was delayed by 16 hours.

Hawes admitted to behaving aggressively on the flight in October 8, 2024, during a court appearance. Her defense lawyer expressed her remorse and highlighted her role as a mother of two. The court learned that other family members, who had joined the flight later, contributed significantly to the disturbance.

Witnesses noted Hawes’ intoxicated state during boarding, with crew members urging the family to lower their noise levels. Hawes continued to swear and disrupt the flight, prompting the captain to divert the aircraft for safety reasons. Subsequently, police intervened upon landing in Cologne, leading to Hawes’ removal from the flight.

Sheriff Frank Gill emphasized the distress caused by Hawes’ actions and imposed a six-month supervision order with a home curfew from 7 pm to 7 am for five months. Additionally, Hawes is required to attend an alcohol misuse service. Co-accused Courtney Maich and Alannah O’Neill, also from Dundee, faced sentencing for their involvement in the incident and received supervision orders along with community service hours and curfew requirements.

Maich was further instructed to compensate a fellow passenger for spitting, and Jet 2 initiated legal action to recover financial losses incurred as a result of the disruption.
