A prominent Conservative Member of Parliament is facing criticism for selling tickets to constituents interested in discussing local issues. Matt Vickers, who serves as the deputy party chairman and a shadow Home Office minister, has organized a coffee morning event where attendees are required to pay £5. This move has sparked outrage among critics who argue that the public should not have to pay to meet their elected representative.
In an email sent to residents in Stockton West, Mr. Vickers’ team promoted the event as an opportunity to address local concerns or simply engage in casual conversation over some refreshments. However, the email also stated that tickets for the event would be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with the proceeds going towards his campaign fund.
One recipient of the email expressed their frustration, stating, “I first contacted Matt Vickers about the economic issues caused by his government, and now he’s asking me to pay to speak with him.” Labour MP Chris McDonald, representing Stockton North, criticized the practice, emphasizing that access to MPs should not be restricted by a financial barrier.
Additionally, Cllr Lisa Evans of Stockton Borough Council condemned the charging of constituents to communicate with their MP, labeling it as a profit-driven approach that goes against the fundamental purpose of serving the public. Labour MP Luke Myer also denounced the event, highlighting that constituents should not have to pay to communicate with their elected representatives.
In response to the backlash, Mr. Vickers defended the event as a community coffee morning and clarified that there are numerous free opportunities for constituents to engage with him. He emphasized his commitment to being accessible and engaged with the local community, noting that the small charge for the event covers refreshment costs and avoids the use of taxpayers’ money.
Despite the criticism, Mr. Vickers affirmed his dedication to connecting with constituents and delivering results for the community. He pointed out that even Labour MPs host paid events, indicating that the scrutiny on his coffee morning event is inconsistent.
