“Major Win: 9.6M Workers Gain Improved Sick Pay Rights”

Date:

Union leaders are celebrating a significant victory for employees as 9.6 million workers gain enhanced sick pay entitlements following a prolonged struggle.

The implementation of new legislation today means that 1.2 million individuals in low-wage positions will now receive statutory sick pay for the first time. Additionally, 8.4 million more employees will qualify for sick pay from the onset of their illness, with an added provision for paternity leave rights for thousands.

These changes mark the initial set of actions under the prominent Employment Rights Act. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak expressed, “Today signifies a pivotal moment for employees. Following persistent efforts from unions and workers, the initial individual rights from the Employment Rights Act are being enforced – a development that will positively impact lives nationwide.”

The modifications ensure that workers will be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay from the first day of their absence due to illness, removing the previous requirement to wait until the fourth day, regardless of their remuneration. This adjustment is anticipated to result in an additional £400 million annually in sick pay for workers, aiming to provide financial security while they recover without the fear of income loss.

Employment minister Dame Diana Johnson emphasized, “No individual should be compelled to choose between their well-being and earning a livelihood. For too long, employees facing illness have grappled with the difficult choice of sacrificing a day’s pay or returning to work while unwell.”

She added, “The transformative changes introduced today will aid employees in their recuperation while offering businesses the assurance that their workforce can return healthier and more productive.”
