The Australian forensic pathologist known as ‘Doctor Death’ has shared insights into various unusual and tragic ways in which people have met their demise after years of investigating grim and eerie cases.
Roger Byard, a renowned forensic expert, has delved into numerous deaths, ranging from victims of serial killers to fatal encounters with animals such as dogs, snakes, sharks, and roosters. In a recent episode of the I Catch Killers podcast hosted by former detective chief inspector Gary Jubelin, Roger disclosed his collection of data on animal-related fatalities.
One notable incident he mentioned involved a fisherman in Australia’s Northern Territory who tragically lost his life when a 25-kilogram mackerel leaped out of the water and fatally struck him in Darwin Harbour, an incident Roger described as a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
During the podcast, Byard, who holds the George Richard Marks Chair of Pathology at the University of Adelaide, also recounted one of his earliest cases known as the ‘bodies in barrels’ murders, which shook Australia in the 1990s. The gruesome killings, orchestrated by John Justin Bunting, Robert Joe Wagner, and James Spyridon Vlassakis in Snowtown, South Australia, targeted suspected individuals without proper evidence, including LGBTQ individuals and those with certain body characteristics.
Roger vividly recalled the chilling discovery of eight partially dismembered bodies in barrels in Snowtown, reflecting on the emotional weight and challenges faced by forensic pathologists in dealing with such distressing cases. He also highlighted a tragic incident where an elderly woman lost her life to her aggressive roosters due to varicose veins, underscoring the potential dangers associated with seemingly minor injuries for individuals with such conditions.
Despite the somber nature of his work, Doctor Death emphasized the importance of sharing these stories to raise awareness and potentially save lives, particularly for individuals with health conditions like varicose veins. He stressed the need for caution and prompt medical attention in case of injuries, no matter how minor, to prevent unforeseen consequences.
In a candid reflection on the psychological toll of his profession, Roger expressed the challenges of dealing with traumatic cases and the difficulty of providing closure to families when definitive answers are elusive. He highlighted the emotional aspect of his work, including the need to support grieving families and reassure them during times of uncertainty and loss.
