Heartbreak in Tenerife: Mother’s Anguish over Son’s Missing Heart

Date:

The mother of a teenager who was tragically killed in a suspected hit-and-run incident in Tenerife has shared her anguish over the discovery that her son was buried without his heart, which was left in Spain. Harry Beg, 19, from Kirkby in Merseyside, lost his life on December 1 after being hit while riding an electric bike in Arona.

Before Harry’s funeral on January 6, his mother, Nicola Gardner, was informed by the Spanish coroner that they had decided to retain his heart. Nicola expressed her devastation, stating that Harry’s heart, being the essence of who he was, was now left behind in Tenerife where he met his tragic end.

Spanish authorities initiated a murder investigation into Harry’s death, referring to it as a “criminal death.” Nicola expressed frustration over the slow progress in the case, emphasizing her desire for justice and closure. She highlighted the impact on Harry’s brothers, who were deeply affected by the loss of their youngest sibling, just days before his 20th birthday.

Despite complications with paperwork, Harry was laid to rest two days after his funeral mass. Nicola criticized the decision to retain his heart, emphasizing that it caused her great distress and prevented her from finding peace at the funeral. She described Harry as a loving, humorous, and intelligent young man who was dearly missed by his family and friends.

Nicola recounted her last interactions with Harry before his untimely death, recalling his excitement about living in Tenerife and the challenges she faced in trying to reach him after the tragic incident. She expressed her ongoing struggle to come to terms with the loss of her son and her relentless pursuit for answers and justice.

As the investigation continues, Merseyside Police stated that they are in contact with Spanish authorities regarding Harry’s death and are committed to supporting his family during this difficult time. Nicola acknowledged the outpouring of support from Harry’s friends and the community, highlighting the overwhelming attendance at his funeral as a testament to the impact he had on those around him.
