Jon Kortmansky was traveling for work when his wife, Lori, stumbled upon the residence that would eventually become their ideal home. Upon laying eyes on it, Jon’s spouse fell in love with the one-bedroom apartment in New York’s Upper East Side due to its stunning dark wooden floors. An expert interior designer, Lori dedicated herself to turning their living space into something truly remarkable. A decade later, the couple acquired the adjacent apartment, merged the two units, and crafted their dream three-bedroom, three-bathroom home with a 240-square-foot balcony.
Reflecting on their life together, Jon, aged 57, shared how they enjoyed a fulfilling life, thanks to his career as a law firm partner that enabled them to travel extensively and ski almost every weekend during the winter months. However, amidst their busy schedules, Lori, Jon’s college sweetheart, had been silently battling brain cancer since her early twenties.
Jon vividly recalled their initial encounter at Indiana University, where their friendship eventually blossomed into love. Two years after getting married at 25, Lori began experiencing troubling symptoms leading to a diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor. Despite enduring numerous recurrences, surgeries, and treatments, Lori’s resilience and positivity shone through, concealing her illness from many.
After her diagnosis, Lori established her own business, learned French, and explored different parts of the world, showcasing her unwavering spirit. Even as her health declined, she continued to engage in activities like skiing and golfing, refusing to let her illness hinder her zest for life.
Tragically, Lori’s condition deteriorated over time, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jon became her primary caregiver while managing his professional responsibilities. The financial and emotional toll of her care was immense, with Jon facing significant challenges to provide for her needs.
Lori passed away in Jon’s arms in 2021, leaving him devastated and struggling to cope with the void in his life. Overwhelmed by memories of their time together, Jon found it challenging to move on and clear out Lori’s belongings in their apartment. His grief manifested in physical symptoms like severe headaches, leading him to seek solace outside their once-beloved home.
With guidance from his sister, Jon embarked on a journey to rebuild his life, ultimately finding a new residence that brought him a sense of relief and renewal. By distancing himself from the past and embracing new experiences, Jon began to heal and rediscover joy in life, honoring Lori’s memory while moving forward.
Now, Jon is focused on embracing the present, forming new connections, and allowing himself to find happiness once again. Through this journey of self-discovery and healing, he honors Lori’s legacy and finds solace in creating a new chapter in his life.
