Tragedy struck at Helen’s Bay beach on Saturday afternoon when a woman in her 60s lost her life after encountering difficulties.
The incident prompted a swift response from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) following a distress call at 1pm. Despite efforts, the woman passed away at the hospital, with authorities confirming that her death is not deemed suspicious. Eyewitnesses provided initial assistance before various emergency teams converged on the location.
The scene was attended by a Coastguard helicopter, alongside rescue teams from Bangor and Portaferry, as well as the police. Responders included a rapid response paramedic, a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crew, a critical care paramedic, and an ambulance officer.
In total, three individuals, among them the deceased woman, required medical attention. While two patients were transported to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, a third person was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Details surrounding the nature of the incident have not been disclosed by NIAS.
