Referring to US actions in Iran, he stated, “This great strength will also bring about a long-awaited day for Cuba, termed A New Dawn for Cuba. We will offer assistance to Cuba.” Trump also acknowledged the presence of Cuban Americans, particularly in Miami, highlighting their history of suffering under past regimes.
Cuba has faced economic and infrastructural challenges due to a US embargo following its involvement in Venezuela. The Trump administration has criticized the Cuban government for its perceived inefficiency and human rights abuses. In exchange for sanctions relief, the US has demanded political reforms, the release of prisoners, and economic liberalization. Despite hints of a potential invasion by Trump, American diplomats have engaged in discussions with Cuban officials, signaling a renewed diplomatic effort. Cuba’s leader has affirmed readiness to defend the nation if necessary.
A senior State Department official reportedly met with Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, the grandson of retired Cuban leader Raúl Castro, during a recent visit to Cuba. The purpose of the meeting, which did not involve Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aimed at fostering dialogue on potential reforms to prevent Cuba from posing a regional security threat. This marked the first official US visit to Cuba outside of Guantanamo Bay since 2016.
