Weather maps indicate that snow and blizzard-like conditions are expected to impact over a dozen major cities in the UK next week.
Based on data from MetDesk, the latest WXCharts maps suggest that around 15 cities in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England could experience significant snowfall between Wednesday, February 4, and Thursday, February 5.
This forecast coincides with the Met Office issuing nine weather warnings for Tuesday as the UK prepares for Storm Chandra, the third major storm this month following storms Goretti and Ingrid.
The maps suggest that London and most of southern England will likely avoid snow but expect rain instead. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated in the Scottish Highlands, with up to 19 inches predicted in some areas. Parts of the Pennines and nearby regions could also see approximately seven inches of snow.
On Tuesday, large areas of the UK are set to face rain and wind alerts as Storm Chandra approaches overnight. The storm has been named Chandra as per the western Europe storm naming convention shared among the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
Paul Gundersen, the Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, warned of the hazards expected from Storm Chandra, including strong winds, heavy rain on saturated ground, and accumulating snow in certain regions.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast from January 31 to February 9 indicates that Atlantic weather systems will move in from the west, leading to periods of rain, showers, and strong winds across the UK.
While mild conditions are expected in the south and southwest, colder air to the northeast may bring wintry showers. There is a risk of snow in some areas, especially on hills, as weather fronts interact with the colder air in the northeast.
