Britons are pointing fingers at Donald Trump for the impending rise in energy costs that will impact households in the UK following the conflict in Iran. A recent survey conducted by Survation for the End Fuel Poverty Coalition reveals that 75% of the population holds the US President accountable for the situation. Additionally, 65% attribute direct blame to the energy sector itself.
The frustration among respondents is evident, with 63% agreeing that the upcoming price hikes essentially represent a ‘Trump Tax’ on their energy bills. This sentiment comes amidst Trump’s persistent push for the UK to resume oil drilling in the North Sea, a move opposed by Keir Starmer’s government.
A majority, encompassing 64% of participants, feel that energy companies are capitalizing on the Iran conflict for profit. Across all political affiliations, British voters support the implementation of a Windfall Tax, also known as the Energy Profits Levy, on energy corporations. Nearly half (47%) advocate for its extension to more companies within the industry.
Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, expressed concern over the growing financial burden on households. He emphasized the necessity of retaining the Energy Profits Levy to address the mounting challenges faced by consumers. Robert Palmer, deputy director of Uplift, highlighted the impact of what he referred to as the ‘Trump Tax’ on citizens, emphasizing the need to transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources like wind power.
Palmer underscored the ineffectiveness of increased drilling in mitigating the crisis, advocating instead for investments in renewables to secure a sustainable future. The public’s awareness of the urgency for energy transition contrasts with Trump’s agenda, emphasizing the importance of government support for renewable initiatives and energy-efficient home upgrades to alleviate financial strain on consumers.
