In Florida, a business owner has been convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting the son of a local high school football coach. The incident occurred when Garrett Hughes, 21, was shot and killed by Lloyd Preston Brewer III, 60, following a confrontation outside a mall in Key West.
The altercation took place after both men had watched the Super Bowl at a bar within the mall. CCTV footage captured Hughes urinating on a wall outside the bar, leading Brewer to approach him and engage in a verbal dispute. Brewer later claimed that he shot Hughes in self-defense, believing the young man was reaching for a weapon.
Despite Brewer’s self-defense argument, a jury deliberated for five hours before finding him guilty of premeditated murder. Witnesses and security footage contradicted Brewer’s version of events, resulting in the guilty verdict. Brewer now faces a potential life sentence in prison.
Following the verdict, Chief Assistant Monroe County State Attorney Joseph Mansfield criticized Brewer’s decision to escalate the confrontation with deadly force. Major Crimes Assistant State Prosecutor Colleen Dunne praised the witnesses for their courage in coming forward and providing crucial testimony that led to justice for Garrett Hughes.
Brewer’s lawyer, Jerome Ballarotto, announced plans to appeal the jury’s decision, citing concerns about the judge’s instructions during the trial.
