Caring for grandchildren has been linked to potential cognitive benefits that could help prevent mental decline, according to research.
A study by the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) revealed that grandparents who took care of their grandchildren tended to exhibit better cognitive functioning and thinking abilities. Particularly, grandmothers displayed superior thinking skills in old age, with research indicating that they offered more care compared to grandfathers.
Lead researcher Flavia Chereches from Tilburg University in the Netherlands emphasized the significance of caregiving grandparents in supporting families and society. The study highlighted that the cognitive benefits of being a caregiving grandparent were more crucial than the frequency or nature of care provided.
Published in the journal Psychology and Aging, the research examined the health, social, well-being, and economic conditions of over 50-year-olds. Data from 2,887 grandparents who participated in surveys and cognitive tests over several years showed that those who provided childcare scored higher on memory and verbal fluency tests, irrespective of the extent of care given. Additionally, grandmothers who provided care displayed less cognitive decline over time.
The study also noted that grandparents with higher initial cognitive levels tended to engage more in activities with their grandchildren. While the research could not definitively establish a causal link between caregiving and improved thinking skills, it suggested that mental benefits from caregiving might vary based on the voluntariness of the care provided.
Ms. Chereches highlighted the potential impact of a supportive family environment on the mental boost gained from caregiving, contrasting it with the effects of caregiving in stressful or unsupportive environments.
