China has recently sent its secretive space plane into orbit for the fourth time, sparking curiosity among defense analysts regarding the spacecraft’s activities. The spacecraft, named Shenlong or ‘Divine Dragon,’ was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in north-west China via a Long March‐2F rocket. Despite limited information released by Beijing, the mission aims to test technology for more cost-effective space travel in the future.
The Chinese government has maintained a high level of secrecy around Shenlong, leaving external observers to gather details from satellite tracking data and enthusiast reports. Shenlong is believed to resemble the US military’s X‐37B, capable of adjusting orbits, extended flight durations, and equipment retrieval. Unlike the X-37B, Shenlong has been observed deploying and retrieving companion satellites in orbit.
Previous missions of Shenlong have demonstrated exceptional endurance and flexibility, ranging from a few days to over eight months. While China asserts the spacecraft’s peaceful intentions, analysts speculate it could be testing satellite maintenance, debris removal, or anti-satellite capabilities. The current mission coincides with the US Space Force’s upcoming X-37B mission, highlighting the emerging rivalry in long-term orbital operations and maneuverability.
The ongoing competition between these covert spacecraft signifies a new era in space exploration, emphasizing the significance of prolonged orbital presence and navigation skills.
