In their first day in Jordan, the royal couple visited the Specialty Hospital in Amman, where they interacted with medical staff caring for evacuees. They met Maria, a 14-year-old girl from Gaza who suffered severe burns on her leg and foot due to a tragic explosion that took the lives of six family members. Meghan shared a heartfelt moment with Maria, offering comfort with a smile.
Maria, traumatized and battling PTSD, underwent amputation of her toes and required hospital care for her burns. Meghan and Harry expressed empathy as they observed Maria’s condition and interacted with other patients, including Jaber, 17, who was receiving necessary medical treatment at the hospital.
Following their hospital visit, the royal couple engaged with Syrian children at a refugee camp, where Meghan showcased her football skills by scoring a penalty. They also toured a youth center managed by Questscope, providing various activities to support mental health among young refugees.
During a roundtable discussion held by the World Health Organization, the British Ambassador to Jordan expressed gratitude for Harry and Meghan’s visit, emphasizing the significance of their support to the humanitarian efforts in the region. The couple’s trip was made at the invitation of the WHO’s director-general and was not affiliated with the UK Government.
Jordan has been a sanctuary for numerous waves of refugees, including Palestinians and Syrians escaping conflicts in their homelands. The recent influx of displaced individuals followed the Israeli government’s military actions in Gaza in response to attacks by Hamas.
