A grieving father shouted three words as the individual who murdered his son was executed. Charles Victor Thompson, aged 55, became the first person in the US to face capital punishment this year for fatally shooting his former girlfriend and her new partner. Serving nearly 30 years on death row, Thompson was put to death for the killings that occurred 28 years ago.
Just before taking his final breath, the murderer implored the families of his victims to forgive him so they could move forward. However, the father of one victim bluntly stated, “He’s in hell.” A spiritual adviser prayed for the killer before his execution, emphasizing that there are no winners in such a tragic situation.
Expressing remorse, the condemned man acknowledged the lasting trauma caused by his actions and urged others to keep faith in Jesus. Following the administration of the lethal injection, the killer gasped loudly, took several breaths, and eventually passed away 22 minutes later. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare remarked that justice had been served after a long wait.
Thompson’s relationship with Glenda Dennise Hayslip turned sour due to possessiveness and abuse, leading to their breakup. Hayslip then started dating Darren Keith Cain, who was fatally shot alongside her during the tragic incident in Houston, Texas. Despite urgent medical attention, Hayslip succumbed to her injuries a week later. The families of the victims had been seeking justice for over 25 years.
After having his initial death sentence overturned, Thompson was resentenced to death via lethal injection following a new trial. Notably, he had previously escaped from Harris County Jail by simply walking out the front door.
