A state of “security threat” has been announced at British air bases located in Cyprus, as per reports. Personnel were instructed to stay indoors until further notice, move away from windows, and seek shelter behind sturdy furniture, according to the Cyprus Mail.
An Israeli journalist, Bitton Rosen, mentioned an “explosion” near the British Akrotiri Air Force base in Limassol, speculating that it could be linked to a potential crash incident.
The security alert was issued just before midnight on Sunday, as detailed by Cyprus Mail. This development coincides with Iran’s ongoing retaliatory actions following joint US-Israeli strikes in Tehran. Iran has targeted various locations in the Middle East, including Dubai, Kuwait, and Bahrain, aiming at US air bases and civilian infrastructure.
UK Defense Secretary John Healey disclosed that two Iranian missiles seemed to be directed towards Cyprus, where two UK military bases are situated, before landing in the water. Although the missiles did not hit the island, the UK government stated that the bases were not the intended targets.
Healey emphasized the escalating threat posed by Iran’s actions, highlighting the vulnerability of military and civilian personnel in the region. The Foreign Office advised British citizens to take necessary precautions due to the heightened regional tensions, potential travel disruptions, and other unforeseen impacts.
