The UK, as stated by Keir Starmer, will assist the US in targeting missile sites in Iran for defensive purposes. This decision follows Iran’s retaliatory actions in response to a recent US-Israeli military operation that led to missile strikes on Tehran.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that while the UK is not directly involved in the strikes on Iran, it has granted permission for the US to utilize British bases, including Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, for defensive operations against Iranian missile capabilities.
Acknowledging the requests from Gulf partners for increased defense measures, Starmer emphasized the importance of safeguarding British lives and supporting allies in the region. He highlighted ongoing defensive operations involving British jets and emphasized the need to neutralize the missile threat by targeting Iranian missile storage facilities and launchers.
The decision to allow the US to use British bases for defensive purposes is aimed at preventing Iran from launching missiles across the region, thereby protecting innocent civilians and British interests. Starmer emphasized the collective self-defense of longstanding allies and the obligation to safeguard British lives.
While the UK remains committed to defensive actions in the region, it will not participate in offensive strikes. Additionally, the UK plans to collaborate with experts from Ukraine to counter Iranian drone threats in the Gulf region.
In a joint statement with France and Germany, the UK reiterated its commitment to defending its interests and those of its allies through proportionate defensive actions to neutralize Iran’s missile and drone capabilities. Collaboration with the US and regional allies on this matter was also affirmed.
