An individual who caused a fatal accident while under the influence of alcohol, resulting in the death of a man and damage to multiple vehicles in London’s West End on Christmas Day, has been sentenced to life in prison for murder. Anthony Gilheaney, 31, from Harlow, Essex, was convicted of murdering Aidan Chapman, 25, and attempting to murder several others during a series of violent incidents on December 25, 2024.
The events unfolded around 1 am on Shaftesbury Avenue, W1, where a car driven by Gilheaney collided with pedestrians, leading to the tragic death of Mr. Chapman. Three other pedestrians were also injured in the incident and taken to the hospital by emergency services. Gilheaney targeted individuals, including Arif Khan, Marcelo Basbus-Garcia, Miguel Waihrich, and Tyrone Itorho, in a sequence of deliberate and aggressive actions.
During the trial, prosecutors alleged that Gilheaney’s attacks were motivated by racist and homophobic sentiments. Despite initially denying his intent to harm anyone, Gilheaney later admitted to manslaughter, unlawful wounding, causing bodily harm, and assault charges related to the incidents.
The violent spree began when Gilheaney assaulted a stranger and targeted individuals based on discriminatory reasons. He physically attacked Mr. Khan and drove recklessly, causing chaos on the streets and endangering pedestrians. Following a police pursuit, Gilheaney abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene, only to be apprehended later by law enforcement officers.
Gilheaney, in a remorseful state, confessed to his actions to the police at the time of his arrest. However, he later claimed memory loss when questioned formally. He attributed his behavior to alcohol consumption and alleged intoxication caused by spiked substances.
Sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 37 years, Gilheaney’s actions on that fateful Christmas Day have left a lasting impact on the victims and their families.
