Passengers have been informed that easyJet has canceled all flights from the UK to a popular Mediterranean vacation destination due to the conflict in the Middle East impacting operations.
UK authorities reported that RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus was targeted in a drone attack, with uncertainty whether the drone was launched directly from Iran or by Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
As a precautionary measure, easyJet announced the cancellation of three return flights between Paphos and Larnaca. While flights scheduled for March 3 are currently unaffected, passengers are advised to stay updated on any changes.
According to a statement from easyJet, flights have been disrupted due to the recent events at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. The airline is working to minimize inconveniences for passengers, offering rebooking options, refunds, and assistance with accommodations and meals if needed to ensure customer safety.
The drone strike on Akrotiri occurred shortly after Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement allowing US forces to utilize British bases for targeting Iranian missile sites in response to Tehran’s actions across the region.
Approximately 300,000 British citizens are in Iran-targeted countries, with 102,000 registered for updates from the Foreign Office. Contingency plans, including a potential large-scale evacuation, are being considered. The damage at Akrotiri was minimal, and no casualties were reported.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson emphasized the priority of personnel safety, relocating families near RAF Akrotiri as a precaution. British forces are not directly involved in the strikes, which aim to defend against missile threats targeting neighboring countries.
Sir Keir clarified that British bases would be used solely for defensive purposes to protect civilians and prevent further escalation of hostilities in the region.
