River Island will be closing 11 of its stores across the United Kingdom today, marking another blow to the retail landscape. The decision comes as part of a broader restructuring effort by the fashion retailer, which aims to reduce its total number of outlets from 250 to 122.
Among the first locations set to permanently shut down is the River Island store in Sutton Coldfield. CEO Ben Lewis acknowledged the shift in consumer behavior from in-store to online shopping, which has necessitated a strategic realignment of the company’s store portfolio. Rising operational costs have further strained the business, prompting the need for a transformation to ensure long-term sustainability.
While recent enhancements to their product offerings and in-store experience have yielded positive results, a comprehensive restructuring plan is deemed essential to secure River Island’s future profitability. The company is committed to minimizing job losses associated with the closures, prioritizing the well-being of its employees.
In addition to River Island, other prominent high street brands like Poundland, Primark, and Superdrug have also either announced or carried out store closures. Primark recently closed its Dartford store in the Orchard Shopping Centre, marking its first closure in a decade. Furthermore, Primark cafés in select locations, including Glasgow Braehead, Edinburgh Princes Street, Birmingham High Street, and Belfast Royal Avenue, are also set to shutter, with no impact on employees.
Poundland has been undergoing a series of closures, with nine additional stores expected to cease operations by the end of March. Recent closures include the Bristol Avon Meads store and upcoming closures of stores in Winton, CHichester, Coatbridge, Feltham, Crayford, Chilwell, and Urmston.
