A man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a violent assault on a council enforcement officer that resulted in the officer losing vision in one eye. The incident took place outside Vauxhall Station in June 2023 when Tim Greenaway, 49, from Laud Street, Lambeth, intervened as the officer was issuing a fine to a woman for littering.
During the confrontation, Greenaway aggressively confronted the officer, filmed him, and physically assaulted him after the officer knocked Greenaway’s phone to the ground. Passers-by, including an off-duty police officer, stepped in to stop the attack before British Transport Police officers arrived and arrested Greenaway.
The enforcement officer sustained severe injuries, including a fractured eye socket and a dislocated shoulder, which required hospitalization and surgery. Despite medical treatment, the officer will permanently lose sight in the injured eye. Detective Constable Steve Potter from the British Transport Police stated that while justice has been served with Greenaway’s conviction, the victim continues to suffer from the long-term effects of the unprovoked attack.
Potter commended the public for intervening and preventing further harm to the victim, emphasizing that violence or intimidation against individuals carrying out their duties will not be tolerated. Greenaway was found guilty of Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent and was sentenced at the Royal Courts of Justice on January 22.
The incident underscores the importance of ensuring safety for individuals in their work environments and the consequences of aggressive behavior.
