A mother and her family narrowly avoided a dangerous situation after initially dismissing her son’s claim of a crocodile near their residence. Stephanie Kirsop initially thought her son, Lionel Saunders, was joking when he alerted her to a reptile near their home. However, upon investigating, she was shocked to find a crocodile in the nearby creek.
The species of crocodile spotted is known to pose a serious threat. Stephanie considers the incident fortunate as children often swim in the creek in Newcastle, Australia. Stephanie was initially skeptical of her son’s report, believing it to be a prank. However, after seeing the crocodile herself, she realized the seriousness of the situation.
The small freshwater crocodile, measuring 39 inches in length, was eventually captured two miles away from where it was first seen. Authorities had difficulty believing Stephanie and her son initially due to the area receiving numerous false reports. The crocodile is currently safe at the Australian Reptile Park until a permanent relocation decision is made.
Billy Collett, the park manager, expressed initial doubts about the authenticity of the images, suspecting them to be computer-generated due to the prevalence of false calls. He emphasized the danger crocodiles pose and the importance of removing them from residential areas for their own safety.
Under Australian law, crocodiles are protected species. The expert speculates that the crocodile was likely a pet that was released into the wild once it grew too large or dangerous. The priority now is to ensure the crocodile’s well-being and prevent it from perishing during the upcoming winter months.
