UK Faces Fuel Price Hike Amid Middle East Tensions

Date:

Drivers in the UK are facing potential fuel price increases due to the recent spike in global oil prices triggered by the conflict in Iran. Petrol stations nationwide are experiencing low fuel supplies as a result of the escalating tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran. The situation in the Middle East, which led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has disrupted oil tanker traffic and caused a surge in oil prices, impacting wholesale fuel costs.

Market experts warn that the rise in oil prices is likely to affect British consumers, with the price of petrol at the pumps expected to climb back to levels seen at the beginning of 2026. Despite assurances from AA president Edmund King that there is no immediate need for panic buying, photos circulating of motorists queuing up at petrol stations indicate growing concerns.

Recent reports show lengthy queues at fuel stations in Oldham, Greater Manchester, and South Queensferry, Scotland, where unleaded petrol ran out due to increased demand amid the oil price surge. While RAC’s head of policy, Simon Williams, acknowledges the potential for higher pump prices in the UK, he notes that sustained high oil prices are necessary for a significant impact on fuel costs.

To help drivers find the best petrol prices, the RAC offers a free ‘Fuel Watch’ tracker that compares prices from major retailers like Asda, Costco, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons. The UK Government is closely monitoring the situation, ensuring energy security and supply stability. The Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, has been in contact with relevant authorities to assess any potential impacts on the UK’s fuel supply.
